Quick Maple Update

filed under:

The last update until the end of July… isn’t it sad? Not really.

Sorted two unknown tracks. UNKNOWNDUNGEON1 is now Kerning City Internet Cafe, located on the Victoria Disc. UNKNOWNAMBIENT is now Adobi’s Mission on the Ossyria disc.

The remaining three unknown tracks are closer to being resolved. PERION CONSTRUCTION SITE is now PERION CASTLE, and UNKNOWNDUNGEON2 is now ZAKUM’S ALTAR. UNKNOWN GUITAR has yet to be found out. There is conflict: ZAKUM’S ALTAR takes place in what would be called "Zakum’s Altar", however the song in the Ossyria disc entitled "Zakum" is the music for fighting said boss. What to do, what to do… could someone please tell me the difference?

Anyways, take care everyone, and enjoy the soundtrack as always. And be conscious of my bandwidth ;)… since I’ll be gone next month, if you guys suck it all away downloading I won’t be around to do anything about it.

Happy birthday!

Happy freekin’ birthday, Aaron!

WOO! You’re 16, dance for cryin’ out loud! Do SOMETHING! DRIVE!

At least enjoy the day. ;) Happy birthday, man. We’d have gotten you a cake, but you said you didn’t want anything special to go on.

EDIT: It’s my Uncle Bob’s birthday, too! Whoa, I totally didn’t expect both my favorite friend AND favorite uncle to have a birthday on the same day. Neat ;)… how come I didn’t know this years ago? Happy birthday, Uncle Bob. :)

Possible change in terms…

filed under:

If things keep going as they are now, I may have to take down the Maple Story Soundtrack in order to resolve how to shave bandwidth. More than likely I will institute a registration system, which I hope can be done.

I only have 50GB of bandwidth people, so spare my little site. ;)

I also haven’t really updated the tracks. I’ll do that later, sometime this week.

Gigantic Maple Soundtrack Update!

filed under:

I used to ask people to donate characters in order to reach high level areas to "record" tracks from the game using line-in recording software and my own audio processor, but as of now that is no longer needed! I have succeeded in simply extracting the MP3 files directly from data.wz (main Maple Story data file). Not only was I surprised to find that all of their MP3 files were recorded in 80 and 24 kbps, but slightly alarmed that there were… 916 of them!

Of course, only 69 of them to date are viable music tracks. One of them was a repeat, so on the current patch of Maple Global there are 68 music tracks. This includes tracks that have not yet been placed in-game! Some will probably never be put in the game, so you have the treat of hearing those little tidbits that nobody else will ever hear (unless they download this soundtrack, of course).

There are currently 11 unidentified tracks. These are placed under the album "Memories of the Unknown." As they become identified, they will be moved to the other two albums. However, Wizet will probably be adding new unidentified music to all of their patches, so you may see a steady stream of "unknown" tracks. The CD has track titles intentionally created to look like a buggy beta build naming system. They’ll become neat and organized when they’re sorted into their respective albums, if ever.

Questions, comments, and all general feedback on the soundtrack can be sent to me at blog [at] thejasoneffect.net. Happy listening!

Don’t touch that USB drive, Johnny! You don’t know where that’s been!

filed under:

It takes a true visionary to devise a test of human nature using the one thing that everyone will go for: USB drives. Engadget uses the phrase, "Do: Use USB drives. Don’t: Use ones you’ve picked up on the street." Apparently, people don’t like following this.

Over at Secure Network Technologies some people decided that, due to complaints about the insecurity of using USB drives, they would toss some of the worthless free USB drives they had collected over the years into the company parking lot. The number was twenty. Their intent was to catch the hypocrites at work: The same people that complained about the insecurities of USB drives would take the bait and plug these babies in.

What’s so special about a USB drive in a parking lot? They were all loaded with a special Trojan designed specifically to collect data from the user’s computer and send it back to the company, where it would be monitored.

All twenty were plugged in. Fifteen of them were used by employees.

Behold social engineering, the USB way.
