NaNoWriMo 2008: Day 11

filed under: , , , ,

I completely zoned out while writing this, which is exciting – it means I’m getting very absorbed in my writing. I’ve finally began to develop the motif I’ve wanted to since the beginning, and it doesn’t look like the story is going to move out of talos anytime soon. We’ll see how things go, but for now just keep reading if you’re enjoying the story! :D

In addition, I’ve been reading The Time Machine by HG Wells since a few days ago, and am over half finished with it, and I mut say I’m really in love with the steampunk atmosphere right now. I don’t want it to go away! But I’ve got big plans for Ames, so you’ll just have to keep reading and see what she turns out to be. By the way, if you haven’t noticed, most major characters that stick around get their names from early 20th century and late 19th century inventors and engineers. Yeah, there was a guy named Wheat. Go figure!

filed under: , , , ,

After meeting the crew of the Underground Railroad Station A and learning where the world of Talos gets its power – the Carnot Engine – Graham is introduced to the true horrors of Lanford when Wheat takes him out at night to witness a knight beating and arresting an entire family with minimal effort – but then an advanced technology appears that even Wheat has never seen before.

After drinking two bottles of Bawls Guarana energy soda, I think this was the fastest 3333 words I’ve ever written. I’m in shock that I’m done before midnight! At any rate, Graham is getting a taste of Lanford, but his sweet surprise won’t last for long – by tomorrow or the next day the Underground Railroad in Lanford will get busted, and he’ll be stuck with a bunch of the blame… but have an opening to explore the strange and advanced technology used in his capture.

Lanford, the city of cities, the hope of hopes, the end of days! Graham arrives in what will soon become his worst nightmare, and his greatest challenge of all time. But for now, he can get cushy on another train ride. Just for now. By the way, the novel is now just over a quarter finished! Woohoo!

I’ve made a correction in ast entires. I’d been typing Light Sphere when I really meant Lamp Sphere – it’s been corrected. Also, I corrected a statement about Marcus’s accent in yesterday’s post so that the way he speaks is at least a little more sensical.

NaNoWriMo 2008: Day 5

filed under: , , , ,

Not even a day has Graham been in Talos, but he’s already discovered the planet’s name and structure – Graham finds Marcus and procures a map, and faints when he sees that none of the maps show Earth, but all show Talos. As of right now, his “mission” is to find out why he was sent to Talos, or how he came about to be in Talos, because he believes that will show him how to return to Earth. However, a we know, he will run into the authorities along the way… even if what he might at first thing is a utopian society, he’ll soon begin to experience the seeds of civil unrest and martial law that hold him in Talos. So, not only will it become his mission to leave, but he’ll be forced to flee and attempt to escape, and… well, I won’t ruin more for you. That’s pretty much a summary of the next several days, perhaps the next week entirely!

Okay, I lied. He’s not in Talos yet, but only because I had a flood of inspiration and felt very satisfied with how things were rolling out. So, he’s almost in Talos – but not yet. Something will happen tomorrow… well, just wait and see what happens with the typewriter. Oh, and don’t mind Lars Othret. He couldn’t possibly have any relation to the supposedly-deceased Danil Othret.

I can’t even begin to tell you how frustrating it was to write this beginning part. I largely had not planned any of these events, and I’m desperately trying to make sure they aren’t filler. I plan to make these events crucial later in the novel, so what seems like the pretty mundane right now will have a significant impact near the end, or the middle. Anyways, tomorrow the interesting stuff begins – with the Curie family getting out of the way, that means their stuff is Graham’s for the taking. Tomorrow will most likely contain Graham’s entry into Talos.
