Google Talk for Cell Phones
Just can’t get enough of Google Talk on your desktop or laptop? Like text messaging? Well, this is probably a step up.
MGTalk is a creation by… some awesome people, who decided that Google Talk was great, but it needed something more. Something to grasp the market of the tons of people who text message every day. And so now the beta of Google Talk for phone, MGTalk, is born.
As far as I know, it only has instant messaging features. A call feature on a cell phone seems pointless, doesn’t it? And chances are voice calls through the internet on a cell phone’s wifi connection would be too much for it to handle. Data transfer is hardly so fast, and your cell phone internet bill would go through the roof after a few seconds, most likely.
Not all phones are compatible, as it is in beta stage. I know for one that my RAZR V3 has had trouble connecting to the Google Talk network, and has in fact never connected once. However, it runs fine until it has to connect. Try it out on your phone if you know how to install it - with some phones it takes a bit of know-how, but if you do have such know-how it’s worth a shot.
The client runs off of j2me midp 2.0, or midlet, which is a Java runtime environment present on most recent cell phones. Chances are that, if you know that your phone runs midp 2, this application will be compatible. However, even though the RAZR series runs it, it has not worked with my V3 - the new V3i and V3x may be compatible. It’s all chance, as I see it, especially since this is in beta stage.
For those who are able to get it fully working, it would be great if you could comment here about how it works! I’m eager for the info myself.
